Temporary Beginnings 3r27h
Racing started at Catterick in 1783, although a permanent course was not built until 1813 and the first grandstand was only added in 1906. The framework of that original grandstand is still evident, interspersed with many improvements, to create a friendly mix of old and new.
Sheep Snow Ploughs 2l736e
During bad weather in 1819, a Catterick landlord and farmer Mr Ferguson – a 33/1 winner of the Doncaster St Leger with Antonio – ensured racing was able to go ahead by sending his flock of sheep around the course to melt the snow.
The Catterick Racecourse Company 4t4b4x
In 1923, the Catterick Racecourse Company was formed to deal with the increasing attendances – it still exists today and in 2004 raised £600,000 for a new stableyard.
Collier Hill 5c2a37
In 2002 Collier Hill won his first race here – he went on to win the Irish St Leger, Canadian International Stakes and Hong Kong Vase.
New Developments and the Dales Stand po5s
The opening of the new Owners & Trainers stand named the Dales Stand marks the completion of the third and final phase of a three-year, £3.5 million development project undertaken by Catterick Racecourse. The first phase, including a new entrance, offices, horse box park and saddling boxes, opened in December 2018. Phase two opened in June 2019 and comprised of an enlarged parade ring, incorporating a new winners’ enclosure, and a refurbished and extended weighing room, including a new warm-up area for jockeys.
The final phase, the Dales Stand, designed by Northumberland-based Elliott Architects, draws on the history of horse racing and the buildings of the region, providing a subtle but distinctive addition to the racecourse. The stand was
opened by Rishi Sunak, MP for Richmond (Yorkshire), on Friday 23rd April 2021.
