Racing has been taking place at Sedgefield Racecourse from around 1732, with the first recorded meetings in 1846. The original course was laid out in the Sands Hall Estate, for the local hunt to host an annual two-day meeting.
Never Heavy Going 2w3i72
The dense turf of the course absorbed rainwater so well, it was never known to get heavy; the course was so highly esteemed it was known as the ‘Melton of the North’ in the same way York today is described as the ‘Ascot of the North’. After Richard Ord, owner of the Sands Hall Estate died in 1920, a new racecourse company was founded in 1927 and racedays were gradually increased to the current level.
